Penhallow Deep Geothermal Power Project

Penhallow is a hamlet situated on the A3075 between Callestick and Perranzabuloe, and lies within the parish of Perranzabuloe. The parish stretches from the A3075 at Chiverton Cross in the south, to Holywell and Mount in the north, encompassing the coastal town of Perranporth and inland Goonhavern.

The site location was selected for its geology, easy access from a major A road and a viable connection to the national grid for both importing and exporting electricity at the site. Furthermore, the land is not in a conservation area, has no other restrictions and is close to other industrial businesses which could utilise the power and heat directly from the site.

Planning permission was granted by Cornwall Council for the Penhallow Deep Geothermal Power Project in September 2022, after a year of consideration and amendments. Work has now started on detailed preparation to meet planning conditions and ensure each stage of the project, from site preparation to electricity generation, runs smoothly. Once ground works are able to start, it is anticipated to take around three years for the site to reach electricity generation.

More information will be available as site work progresses but in the meantime, if you have any questions about the project, please email: penhallow@geothermalengineering.co.uk.

Penhallow Site Acquisition

The site was selected for the excellent geology, its proximity to a major A road, a viable connection to the grid and because it is not situated within any designated conservation areas.

Planning Application Under Consideration

An application for planning permission at the Penhallow site was submitted in September 2021. A number of comments and suggestions were made by planning consultees and the public over the following year and our plans were updated to better suit the site location and reduce the impact of development on the local community. These changes resulted in the application being recommended for approval by the planning officer in September 2022.

September 2021
Planning Permission Achieved

Planning permission was granted by the Strategic Planning Committee of Cornwall Council in September 2022. A number of conditions need to be met prior to any work starting on site.
