Jubilee Pool

Geothermal Engineering Ltd was part funded under the European Regional Development programme to develop a low carbon heat supply (geothermal) at the Jubilee Pool lido, Penzance. The company provided the private match funding for the project, circa £420,000.

The project has delivered sustainable, geothermal heat to a section of the pool in order to maintain a water temperature of 35℃.

The pool is now open, visit jubileepool.co.uk for details.

System Operation

The system operates by extracting warm water from one geothermal well (circa 410m deep), taking heat out of that water using heat pumps and distributing it to the pool via a heat exchanger, before re-injecting the cooler water back into the ground. The wells were drilled as close to the pool as was physically possible. The combined system means that the temperature of the pool can be sustained with a very low carbon footprint.

The system is the first of its kind in the United Kingdom and will act as a showcase for geothermal, low carbon heat supply.
