In a first for the UK, we’re set to deliver the first commercial quantities of zero-carbon lithium. Recent tests revealed around 340ppm of geothermal lithium in the geothermal fluid at our United Downs site – one of the highest concentrations in Europe.
Lithium can be sustainably extracted from geothermal fluid, avoiding the energy-intensive production processes currently used such as mining. As a key component of electric vehicle batteries, zero-carbon lithium will be crucial to the UK’s energy transition as demand continues to grow.
Backed by recent government funding, we’re aiming to start production in 2024. We spoke to the Financial Times about why this exciting development will be so significant in helping the UK meet its ambitious sustainability targets
